From Pam Thomson (Chester Guild Safeguarding Officer)

You may know that the Church of England are currently in the process of introducing the latest Learning & Development Framework for Safeguarding. An article published in The Ringing World (14th Jan 2022 p33) describes the training requirements for ringers. You will see that there appears to be some flexibility given by the National Safeguarding Training and Development Manager, Lisa Clarke concerning “Leadership Training”.

I would appreciate feedback from tower captains concerning the new Leadership Training, you may wish to discuss this with your Parish Safeguarding Officer as well as your band. It may be that most tower captains are happy to undertake the new training, but it has been said that some feel it is not something they would be prepared to do and would “throw in the towel” as Simon Linford, President of the Central Council of Church Bellringers (CCCBR) has put it in a recent blog.

The above link also contains a link to the Church of England Framework document.

Safeguarding training details can be found on the Diocese of Chester website here.

Safeguarding is a very important area which we must take seriously but as the attached article says, “the framework should be applied in a sensible way which reflects local circumstance”. To that end, please let me know your views, preferably before the end of February.  We will inform the Diocese of the views of the membership and hope to have subsequent discussions with the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisor concerning the feedback.

Many thanks.
